Over the weekend I attended a Renewable Energy Community Forum at the Springwood Community Centre.
I know that this issue is important for locals, and when over 100 people showed up, it was clear proof of that.
It’s an important issue for everyone because the world is changing. It’s changing fast.
So, let’s take a snapshot of where we are at.
Electricity demand is increasing rapidly, here and abroad, and as the Australian Energy Market Operator reports–
“The June quarter was an unparalleled period for Australia’s energy markets… and… high international commodity pricing, coal outages, and rising gas-fired generation drives record prices.”
So, we must make the most of the challenges before us, and we must leave a better world for the generations to come.
The alternatives are just too costly, and too great a risk.
The climate legislation and actions on renewable energy taken over the first 100 days of the Albanese Government have been profound.
We must take real action on powering our future.
To ensure we capitalise, the Palaszczuk Government has been sowing the seeds.
We committed to a 50 per cent renewable energy target by 2030 and this year alone we’ve invested $2 billion in large-scale storage, renewable energy projects and generation and transmission investment.
That investment includes:
- Building zero emissions superhighways for electric and hydrogen powered vehicles;
- Installing a network-connected battery blitz right across Queensland;
- Securing investment to connect the biggest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere to the National Electricity Market;
- Investing in multiple facilities to give workers the skills required for our renewable energy and hydrogen powered future;
- Upgrading generation and transmission capacity from our Renewable Energy Zones;
- Funding our Greenbank battery that dwarfs the ‘big-battery’ famously built in South Australia; and
- Reforms to support our world record amounts of rooftop solar.
I was so happy to see so many locals engaged on this issue, because we can achieve more if we end climate wars and work together.
