Budgets might be considered boring.
But they’re important, and this one in particular has the potential to shape a generation – for better, or worse.
Undoubtedly, the state government budget isn’t like one we’ve seen – not recently.
No attempt is being made to balance the budget. The level of debt is irrelevant to a bottom line geared towards creating jobs and constructing a “normal” economy.
Most will agree modern times call for spending which on other occasions would be regarded irrational.
History will tell whether our state and federal governments are doing the right thing by sending the coffers into a downward spiral.
Mayor Darren Power in his column today praises the budget as a good outcome for Logan.
In fairness, a budget which offers handouts across the board is hard to slam. After all, it ticks all the “what’s in it for me” boxes and pays down projects which would normally have to wait in a tightly-constrained priority list.
Therein may lie the problem. Debt may have been driven so high that the hole we’re digging becomes irreversible.
Let’s hope that’s not the case, but time will be the ultimate judge.
