Man, 18, allegedly caught driving nearly 100km/hr over speed limit

A man, allegedly driving almost 100km/h over the speed limit in Logan’s west, was one of thousands caught driving dangerously in Queensland over the school holidays.

The 18-year-old was allegedly detected travelling 177km/h in an 80 zone – 97km/h over the speed limit – at Park Ridge on 6 July.

He was one of many who received about 9000 traffic infringements for “serious breaches” of road rules over the last two weeks, from 28 June to 13 July.

“Police are extremely concerned following some of the high speeds detected, particularly involving young and inexperienced drivers and vulnerable road users,” police said in a statement.

“… and are calling on parents and loved ones to talk about safe driving with at risk drivers.”

Across the state, more than 600 drivers were found to be over the legal alcohol limit during the two week period, while more than 450 returned a positive result for drugs and had to undergo further testing.

Acting chief superintendent of road policing Steven Newland said it was disappointing to see people still ignoring the road rules, and putting themselves and other road users at risk.

“Travelling at… double the speed limit is unacceptable behaviour – there is no excuse for those kinds of speeds,” he said

“Our officers have been out and about conducting road safety operations to make sure everyone makes it home safely, but we need all motorists to also play their part.”

“With kids going back to school and school zones back in action, we urge everyone to drive to the conditions, slow down and remember the Fatal Five.”

Police data shows that serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
