Support for Greenbank high school soars as MPs lodge petition

More than 850 people have signed a petition calling on the Queensland government to buy land for a new high school at Greenbank.

The petition was launched last month by local state opposition MPs Charis Mullen, the Member for Jordan, and Linus Power, the Member for Logan.

Prior to the October 2024 election, the Logan west duo promised to build a high school at Greenbank if their Labor government was re-elected.

The Department of Education even earmarked a block of land – opposite Everleigh State School on Anderson Drive – and set asside the funding needed to build the school.

But the Labor Party was not returned to government, and the block has not yet been purchased.

Last week, the MPs’ petition was lodged with the Minister for Education, John-Paul Langbroek.

“We believe the time is right to purchase land for a new secondary school in the
area,” Ms Mullen said.

“It is a practical step that gives residents in Greenbank, New Beith and surrounds
assurance that the proper planning is underway to meet the future educational needs
of their children.”

Mr Power thanked the community for its “strong support”.

“There’s been a great response from locals that shows that this further investment is needed now,” he said

The MPs are awaiting a response from the education minister.

“We need to be proactive in planning for the school and securing this land is a
responsible measure to do just that,” Ms Mullen said.

“I look forward to hearing from the minister and will continue to keep my community updated.”
