Stadium thumbs up from State review

The City of Logan’s future “Olympic” stadium has survived a state government review to investigate the bang for buck of proposed Olympic venues.

The review recommended the government proceed with its plan to build the 7000-seat indoor stadium currently proposed for Logan Central.

The recommendation was accepted but it remains unclear what the venue will host, if anything at all.

“The Logan Indoor Sports Centre will service one of the fastest growing areas in South East Queensland,” the report found.

“It will help to address the significant current and projected shortfall in indoor courts and provide great legacy benefits for the Logan community.

“The Logan Indoor Sports Centre… could be used as a training or competition venue during the Games.”

Former mayor Darren Power was a strong advocate for the stadium, claiming it would give the city its “deserved seat” at the 2032 games and “change the face” of Logan Central.

Mayor-elect Jon Raven backed Mr Power’s statements.

He said he was “really excited” the government accepted the review’s recommendation.

“This is an indoor sports stadium that is sorely needed in Logan,” Cr Raven said.

“This is a facility we need irrelevant of the Olympics, and it would be a catalytic piece of sports infrastructure that we want to make sure is multi-use.

“It won’t just be for sport, but for functions and conferences as well – we want to make sure we get the best benefit of whole community.”

Cr Raven said the venue was always intended to be used for training with the potential to host an event.

“I’ll be pushing to get an event there, especially something the people of Logan would be interested in attending and watching,” he said.

“We’d be happy with anything, but I’ll be pushing for more than our fair share of attention, especially because it will be a brand-new facility.

“It will be really well connected to public transport and in the heart of the Logan Central masterplan precinct.”

Logan currently only has one court per 28,000 residents, which the government says is “significantly less than surrounding areas”.

A business case for the stadium is currently underway, including designs, budgets and a possible location for the venue at Logan Central.

Council hoped the stadium could be used as at least a training facility for athletes from a multitude of sorts, including basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and wheelchair basketball.

The venue would be the size of nine basketball courts and construction is predicted to start in 2025 and finish by the end of 2027.
