A Greenbank computer group with three decades of patronage is on the brink of collapse.
The Greenbank District Computer Group is a group for seniors run by seniors.
But low attendance caused by unwell members has meant it’s unfeasible for the group to run, so creator Dawn Smith is looking for new members.
Ms Smith said the group has had more than 300 members over the years and she’d be sad to see it go.
“I’d feel sad but a little proud I’d helped others with a ‘truly rare non-profit group’,” Ms Smith said.
“I’d feel happy of new friendships and knowledge gained by all.”
Ms Smith said she didn’t imagine the group would last as long as it did.
“In 1995, I left my office job of 12 years to care for my ill husband,” she said.
“In those years, computers were just advancing.
“I felt the need to keep updated with computers and that there must be others like me.”
Typically, the group remained small – around 35 members at time, but Ms Smith said Covid had an impact on the headcount.
She said Logan lacked cheap, not-for-profit clubs for the older generations.
“Computers are now a huge part of many peoples lives, from young to the elderley,” Ms Smith said.
“Many enjoy sharing and learning computers and also the social side and companionship.”
It’s for these reasons that Ms Smith said she was not ready to let the group go.
The Greenbank District Computer Group meets on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, from 9 to 12am, at Logan West Library.
