Second multi-billion dollar TMR blowout in Logan

A second major transport project in Logan has blown out by billions, Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has confirmed.

The Daisy Hill to Logan Motorway upgrades are now projected to cost $4.5 billion – a blow out of 350%.

Originally the project was set to cost $1 billion, with both the state and federal governments chipping in $500 million each.

The upgrades will see 10km of the M1 widened by two lanes, and the South East Busway extended from Springwood station to Mandew Street at Shailer Park.

This is the second TMR project that has unexpectedly blown out, with the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail revealed to have blown out by over double last month – from $2.6 billion to $5.75 billion.

The state government has blamed three main factors for the rising costs: global events causing supply chain issues, labour and skill shortages, higher construction costs and inflation rates, and unexpected issues such as extreme weather.

Blowout figures for 31 other infrastructure projects across the state have also been confirmed.

The Loganlea train station relocation project has increased from $95.1 million to $173.8 million, and the intersection upgrade at Beenleigh Connection Road and City Road at Beenleigh has increased from $11 million to $14 million.
