Road tragedy at Greenbank

The community is mourning the death of a local mum-of-three after she died in a tragic car accident last week.

Sophie-Marie Wemyss, 34, died on her way home from work on Wednesday 5 July after her car made contact with an oncoming truck at Greenbank.

Her sister Janis Wemyss has made a Go-Fund Me page to raise funds for the funeral, and said there were “no words to describe the pain” of the family’s loss.

More than 300 people have donated to the campaign, raising more than $18,700.

“For anyone that knew my sister Sophie, she had the biggest heart, and her three children were her whole world,” Ms Wemyss said.

“She truly just wanted to help the world and was kind.

“I am wanting to raise money for her high school sweetheart and best friend, so he can cover the cost of the funeral and spend time with the children during this time.”

Ms Wemyss said her sister didn’t have funeral insurance, and because she made a detour on her way home from work – to pick up slippers she left at a friend’s house – it won’t be covered under workcover.

“She was the type of person who just made her kids share a room, so she could take in a stranger who was facing being homeless and invited them into her home,” she said.

“Sophie always reminded her children to say goodbye and to tell people that you love them, because you never know when it will be the last time.

“Her words have never been so true.”

Sophie-Marie Wemyss was travelling along Middle Road at Greenbank around 2pm on Wednesday 5 July when her car made contact with an oncoming truck.

Ms Wemyss – the only person in the car – died at the scene, while the driver and sole occupant of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ms Wemyss’ husband, Dale Pacey, said online he had lost his best friend and soul mate.

“And mother of my three beautiful children,” Mr Pacey said.

“We will miss you forever.”

Janis Wemyss said she knew was a “hard time for all, so please only give if you can”.

“Also, please let this be a reminder to always take care of those you love, because you never know when you won’t get a second chance,” she said.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and is appealing to any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the crash to contact police.
