Road safety questions following crash killing three, hospitalising three

RESIDENTS are calling for urgent safety action from Transport and Main Roads following the tragic death of three people in an accident at the weekend.

In a head-on collision at around 4.30pm on Saturday, an 18-year-old man from Marsden, who police said was driving a Toyota, was killed.

A Stafford Heights man, 65, and a Kendron woman, 33, who were driving the other car, a Volkswagen, were also killed in the horrific Waterford Tamborine Road crash.

A woman, 65, a man, 36, and a toddler, a two-year-old girl, were taken to hospital with critical and serious injuries.

The Toyota burst into flames, according to police, and the Volkswagen rolled over, according to media reports.

The stretch of road has become a nightmare for motorists and residents.

Muhammad Gohar and his family, who live near the scene of the crash, told media they rushed to the road to help.

Mr Gohar’s son Muhammad Aihab, 17, broke one of the Volkswagen’s windows with a hammer to reach the toddler trapped in the car.

“We pulled the baby out, she was covered in blood,” Mr Aihab said.

“It happened so fast – I kept asking other people what happened to the guy in the other car. By the time we were helping the other people, that car went up in flames.”

Television news reports on Sunday night showed vision of moments before the tragic crash.

Residents told news reporters they had seen at least eight crashes on that section of Waterford-Tamborine Road in the past three years.

“Something needs to be done by the authorities,” one told Channel 9.

They said it was an awful stretch of road that was exacerbated by impatient and recalcitrant drivers.

They reported speeding beyond the road’s 80km/h limit, and tailgating.

Police said Waterford Tamborine Road between Camp Cable Road and Dollarbird Drive was closed for several hours following the crash.

On Monday morning, media reported the two-year-old girl in a serious but stable condition in Queensland Children’s Hospital.

The Stafford Heights woman remains in a critical but stable condition, and the Kendron man is now in a stable condition. Both remain in hospital.

The Foresnic Crash Unit continues to investigate the crash.

Anyone with information, CCTV, or dashcam footage is urged to contact Policelink on 131 444.
