Proud to be an Australian

At its annual Australia Days Awards and Citizenship ceremony, the Logan City Council welcomes the newest members of our local community and highlights the efforts of those who make incredible contributions to Logan, through their important advocacy work and volunteering efforts.

It is always pleasing to be a part of an event that means so much to so many.

On a day to reflect, respect and celebrate, it was wonderful to welcome 110 new Australians into Logan.

Hailing from over 41 countries, our newest Australians represent the true multicultural make up of our nation.

Delivering the minister’s message, I was delighted to share in their special day, which also included honouring some of our amazing local success stories, through the Logan Australia Day Awards for 2023.

Citizen of the Year went to Rachel Simpkin-Bale, who has devoted herself to providing vital aid and support to women who have, or are experiencing, domestic and sexual violence. Through her over 30 years of advocacy service, across a range of state and local bodies, Rachel has substantially progressed the cause of ending violence against women, be it through hosting fundraisers or educational events.

Amelia Ayris took out the Young Citizen of the Year award for her incredible volunteer work. Working as a youth ambassador for Bravehearts at just 16 years old, Amelia has dedicated herself to advocating for some of the most vulnerable in our community – children who have experienced sexual abuse.

Finally, the Spirit of Logan Award went to Tammy Robinson. Tammy’s work through Formally Ever After, truly does represent the spirit of our local Logan community. A free community program, Formally Ever After lends a helping hand to students in need, by providing dresses & suits, allowing them to take part and attend their Year 12 formal.

Congratulations are also in order for all the other nominees on the work you have done, and continue to do, for our wonderful Logan community. They include Georgia Faith Leo, Fred Waters, Janee Hong, Lee McKenzie McKinnon and Chappy Nick Carroll.

Well done to you all on your fantastic achievements!
