The mighty Rochedale Springwood Lions Club has now been roaring for 50 years and I congratulate them for this half-century of service to our community.
Anyone who’s been around long enough might remember when the local club was formed in 1972.
Dad was one of its first members back in the day, when setting up the Springwood Ambulance Station was one of the club’s top priorities. In fact, the very first ambulance was delivered by funds raised by the mighty Lions.
They haven’t stopped since.
From our annual Australia Day citizenship ceremonies to their work with the Logan East Community Neighbourhood Association (LECNA) and local Special Education Units, to Story Dogs, Hearing Dogs, the Australian Lions Wellbeing Foundation, and the Letters to Santa and Trauma Teddies projects, their tireless work can be seen everywhere you look.
And I’m sure that’s by no means a complete list either.
Of course, the Lions goodwill spreads far beyond Logan. Their Recycle for Sight program has been supplying refurbished glasses to developing nations for more than 26 years.
If you’ve got an old pair lying around the house, you can donate them at OPSM at Arndale Shopping Village or Maureen Leach Optometrists at Rochedale Shopping Village.
Earlier this month, Jim Chalmers and I joined in on the Rochedale Springwood Lions Club’s official 50th birthday celebrations.
Even though it was their birthday, it was me who was given the gift of being inducted into what I consider a local institution.
As its newest member, I am looking forward to working with my fellow Lions to promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.
If you want to get on board and become a member too, or even just volunteer or buy a raffle ticket, head to the Rochedale Springwood Lions Club website.
