Police target 20 car alleged hooning group, several charged

A huge hooning crackdown over the weekend saw four men arrested and a fleet of 20 cars intercepted.

Logan police say the group of cars was first seen at Mercantile Drive in Park Ridge, before they “expanded in numbers” and drove along the Mount Lindsay Highway.

Police reported that most occupants attempted to “conceal their identities”.

The group drove to Rocklea where they were joined by spectators, according to police.

Inspector Glenn Ryder said the large group allegedly engaged in dangerous driving behaviours, placing members of the public “at significant risk of injury”.

“A Falcon sedan with its roof cut off was witnessed being used for skidding with four to five occupants,” he said.

“This modification posed significant safety risks, leading us to prioritise its intervention.”

The Falcon was allegedly abandoned in Marsden before the driver was apprehended and taken into custody at a Logan address.

Another car allegedly skidding was also located and towed.

“We were able to detect and disrupt the hooning activities effectively while keeping the community safe,” Inspector Ryder said.

“The operation was deemed a success due to the collective efforts of multiple districts.”

Among those charged was an 18-year-old Loganlea man, a 19-year-old Waterford West man, a 20-year-old Park Ridge man, and a 22-year-old Loganlea man.

Their charges range from driving without a licence and driving an unregistered car, to evading and obstructing police.

Police said they would continue additional measures and intelligence-driven deployment to deter further hooning activities.

“Our commitment to managing and reducing hooning activities is unwavering,” Inspector Ryder said.

“We aim to ensure community safety through continued vigilance and coordinated efforts.”

Police said they hoped this hooning operation sends a “strong message” to those involved to deter them from organising, promoting, or filming hooning.
