Pirates move into Yarrabilba

The Logan City Pirates have officially made Yarrabilba their new home, marking a major milestone for the club after almost two decades of searching for a permanent base.

Club president Ms Daniella Greig said the move to McKinnon Sports Park North had been years in the making, and represented the stability the Pirates had long been working towards since their establishment in 2008.

The club had previously operated out of Park Ridge, but Ms Greig said the need for a true home ground – one the club could grow into – continued after plans to relocate junior teams to Everleigh at Greenbank fell through.

She said the plan was to find a local cricket club to use the field in the AFL off-season. There are also plans for Little Athletics to also use the precinct, turning the site into a multi-sport hub for the growing suburb.

In the meantime, the Pirates have already started building momentum with pre-season training.

Until 18 December, the club is running free Thursday-night pre-season sessions, open to anyone wanting to try AFL – from first-timers to experienced players.

The Pirates are recruiting across the board, with programs for juniors and seniors. The club is keen to hear from boys and girls as young as six right through to adults in their 30s and 40s who want a social, local team.

She said the move had been well received among existing members, but she was most excited about what it would mean for Yarrabilba.
