Opinion – Working hard to get flood mapping right

By Logan Mayor Jon Raven

It’s been a busy few months at council as we work through one of the most important and complex issues facing our city: flood mapping.

I know how deeply this affects many residents and I want to update you on the work underway and the steps we’re taking to get this right.

In the coming weeks, we will hold two Special Council Meetings to consider flood-related matters.

The first will look at the independent review of the Logan and Albert Rivers Flood Study.

The second will focus on flood mapping and policy.

These meetings are part of our commitment to transparency.

They ensure decisions are made in public, based on the best available information, and with the benefit of expert advice and community input.

Your feedback has been central to this process.

Thousands of residents have shared their experiences, concerns and ideas with us.

This feedback directly shaped our decision to commission an independent review, investigate the issues raised by the community, and look closely at how flood information is presented so it is clearer and more consistent.

I’ve also been working closely with the Deputy Premier and the Queensland Government to advocate for better outcomes for Logan.

Flood risk is not something local government can solve alone, and it’s vital that all levels of government work together to support our community.

Around 20,000 property owners will receive a written update from me outlining what has happened since they were first contacted by council about flood mapping changes, and what the next steps will be.

Council is continuing to work through all formal submissions made as part of the draft Logan Plan.

There are thousands of submissions to consider and every submission counts.

As all Queensland councils move to the new risk-based mapping approach, we have a real chance to make it work better for Logan.

That’s why taking the time to get this right matters.

I am working carefully and openly on the concerns people have raised.

We will continue to publish updates at logan.qld.gov.au/Floodmaps, and I will keep advocating for outcomes that put our community first.
