No spread of Lyssavirus cases in bats

The Metro South Public Health Unit has confirmed that two flying foxes found last month at Regents Park in Logan have tested positive for Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).

However, no further positive cases have been found.

The flying foxes are part of a large colony which have roosted in the area for some time.

Metro South Health public health physician Dr Anu Anuradha said the community should be alert but not alarmed.

She said people should never touch sick or dead bats.

Dr Anuradha said anyone who may have touched these bats should seek immediate treatment.

“It is very important to provide immediate treatment if anyone has had a scratch or bite from a bat to prevent ABLV infection, a lethal disease,” she said.

If you find a sick or injured bat please contact the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or a local bat care organisation – search for “bat care”.
