New Logan landmark: have your say

This week your Councillors will be discussing a new landmark for Logan.

Why? There is some funding available to install public art – it’s already funded but won’t impact our budget, because it’s a grant that doesn’t use ratepayer money.

This is an opportunity to specifically develop and deliver public art, which means the funding can’t be used for anything else.

Once it is complete, the artwork should encourage people to visit an area (even for selfies!), improve what that space looks like and we’d make sure to use a local artist.

One idea is an iconic landmark at Springwood that can be seen from the M1 as you come into Logan from the north.

We don’t want to end up with a mess like the Gold Coast lights, which costs a fortune and can be only be seen from a certain angle.

But this piece of art should be so big you can see it clearly from the highway. If you’re driving that way have a look for the Maccas sign. It could be near there and the same height or a little taller.

Last week I asked my followers on social media what themes they thought were a good way to welcome people to the city, and they came up with more than 700 suggestions!

I really loved reading everyone’s ideas and I thought you might like to see them too.

Some of their suggestions were:

  • A big platypus, koala or other native animals
  • Big ‘LOGAN’ letters lit up with different types of art
  • A group of human statues of all different cultures and ethnicity either hugging or holding hands to show our respect for our differences
  • The City of Logan flower in our logo
  • Flowers that light up at night
  • Something that symbolises a river or a large tree
  • A giant raven flying over the M1 (this one made me laugh)

The most popular suggestion by far was from Leena. It was called “many threads, one tapestry” and she explained it as a large wave made of different metals representing all the different cultures of the Logan community, with each “thread” depicting cultures of Logan (such a Polynesian tattoo art, Aboriginal dot painting, Asian calligraphy, etc).

So what do you think? What themes would you like to see welcome people to the city?
