New councillor Nathan St Ledger says mates helped him win

One of two likely new faces to Logan City Council Nathan St Ledger says people he grew up with in the Logan area were integral to his big win.

Polling more than 45% of the primary vote in a three-way contest, Mr St Ledger said the swarm of people at polling booths were mostly people he grew up with in the area.

“And we’re still mates,” he said.

Mr St Ledger will be giving up his job as support worker at Beaudesert State High School, and will immediately focus on his passion.

“The first thing I do – my one core election promise – is to get in and get dates locked in pretty quick for mental health first aid training,” he said.

“That’s something I can go ‘bang’ and locked.”

He’ll then look to focus on a community groups masterplan and a sporting groups masterplan, he said.

He said it has been unusual for him to be spending time talking about himself, helping others understand his values “and what you’re about”.

“I just wanted to be true to myself during this campaign and be positive at the booths,” he said.

“Now is the exciting part, I suppose – getting out there and getting going (as councillor).”

He said while he was surprised by the margin he held over opponents Lucy Reilly (28%) and Joshua Lucey (26%), his competitive nature had him aiming for 50% of the vote.

“I truly am grateful for all the support and want to thank everyone who’s put me in this position,” he said.
