Need a parking spot? From today, there’s an app for that.
From this week, that’s what drivers will be able to do when a new “smart parking system” is trialed in Beenleigh from this week.
When parking spots become available, the app will notify drivers.
Eventually, the same information will be displayed on electronic signage at key thoroughfares.
Technology is triggered by small sensors and bay number plaques on 373 carpark bays in streets surrounding Beenleigh Town Square.
The trial is expected to go for three years.
Stage one of the project launches today on George St, Crete St, Kent St, James St and Victoria St. Stage two in August will encompass Main St, City Rd, John St, and York St.
Deputy mayor Jon Raven said nobody liked driving around looking for a parking spot.
“This smart parking system will avoid that frustration by advising in real-time exactly where the open spots are,” he said.
Installing of the sensors will be done between 5.30am and 11am to minimise disruption to drivers and businesses.
Some parking bays will have to be closed to allow the work to be done safely. Only one side of the street will be affected on any particular day and parking bays will be reopened once the work is done.
Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy said the new smart parking system would enable drivers to plan their trips into Beenleigh.
“Not only will drivers know where to get a park quickly, the app also will advise how much time you can spend in that bay,” Cr Murphy said.
“That will make it easier to visit Beenleigh to shop and to do business.”
The project will be delivered in two stages to allow for the resurfacing of streets in the Beenleigh CBD and other streetscape upgrades.
