Musical Medicine with Nurse Meeya

Meeya Wright is a woman of many talents – she’s a mum of five, a Paediatric Clinical Nurse studying for her master’s and a YouTube singing sensation – and she’s set to release her debut album this month.

Paediatric Clinical Nurse at Logan Hospital’s Paediatric Emergency Department, Meeya Wright has a mission to help children better understand healthcare through song.

After noticing a lack of healthcare content for kids, Mrs Wright decided to start her own YouTube Channel last year – calling it Musical Medicine with Nurse Meeya – and it took off.

“I was a mum way before I was a nurse and will never forget how difficult it was being in hospital with my children and them not understanding what was going on,” she said.

“We will often put YouTube on for the kids in the wards to distracted them and help keep them calm and comfortable and one night on night duties I thought to myself, I wonder if there are any health-related videos for kids.”

“There really wasn’t much and the ones that were there weren’t coming from qualified healthcare professionals or medical experts.”

Mrs Wright said the idea was to better educate children on healthcare and better prepare them for hospital visits.

“Children are super spreaders of germs, so I wanted to educate children about better hygiene practices when they are sick and what we do when we need to check their vital signs in hospital,” she said.

“Little things frighten children; they get a lot of anxiety and fear in the lead up to a hospital visit and it makes our job really hard when they are resisting or refusing.”

“My aim is to engage with that healthcare element and have them feel empowered and prepared for any type of check-up or procedure they need.”

Before becoming a nurse, Mrs Wright was a musician and a graphic designer, until a serious illness changed her life in 2009.

While being pregnant with her third child, Mrs Wright was treated for Swine Flu in the intensive care unit in a Melbourne hospital.

“I was put into an induced coma, and they had to deliver my baby eight weeks early, via an emergency c-section,” she said.

“We were both very lucky to survive and to have the most amazing nurses look after us and from there I wanted to become a nurse.”

In 2021, Mrs Wright started as a registered nurse in Logan’s Emergency Department and a few years later started working in Paediatrics as a clinical nurse.

“As a mum of five that maternal side fits with nursing, it’s using a mix of science and clinical thinking with that caring aspect as well – caring for people in sometimes the worst time of their life,” she said.

“I always think what would I want as a parent, how would I feel and it really has shaped my personal experience.”

Mrs Wright is currently studying a master of nurse practitioner to take her career to the next level.

Her debut album is called Happy Healthy and Brave Bodies and will be released 1 April.
