Logan’s youth lead the way for community

Meet the Logan Youth Action Group (LYAG), a collection of ambitious young people breaking stereotypes and building community.

And all it takes is “a bit of hard work”.

The group is made up of young people aged 14 to 24 who live, work or study in Logan.

They are both generous and passionate when it comes to the local community, and in the last year have worked hard to turn ideas into practical and effective projects.

In 2024, the 20-strong team created a guide to help seniors navigate the complexities of the digital age, volunteered at community events, participated in university research, and worked with local councillors to improve the city.

They appeared on television, hosted events, cleaned local parks, and maintained a community garden they built at Jimboomba a few years ago.

Group member Kaela Lowry said the team enjoyed creating change about “things that are important to young people”.

Ms Lowry, who studies business and environmental science at Griffith University, joined the group to spark environmental change in Logan.

“I wanted to implement a few different environmental initiatives… and then I found other interests in it as well,” she said.

“Our generation is very knowledgeable about what is going on around the world and in the community.

“Even though there is a stereotype there, I think young people are quite passionate about social justice, climate action and other things that are important topics to the world.

“A lot of people want to see change and are willing to put in a bit of hard work to see that happen.”

Ms Lowry said it was important that communities felt a sense of togetherness.

“It is important for community to know that everyone has each others’ backs and that we are going to fix problems and not just winge about them,” she said.

“But it is important for individuals as well – if you are not part of a community and looking out for other people, then you don’t have that support network.

“It is important to volunteer for your own wellbeing, but also for the community.”
