Logan Entertainment Centre is being used as a temporary Covid vaccination clinic after the city put its hand up to help with the state’s efforts to provide more people with their shot.
Deputy Commissioner Shane Chelepy is co-ordinating operational and logistical elements to support Queensland Health teams and ensure increased access to the vaccine.
“Ensuring more Queenslanders are vaccinated is a huge logistical exercise,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.
Deputy commissioner Chelepy is a 35-year veteran of the police service including as Commander of Police Specialist Operations including SERT.
The deputy commissioner says: “Our disaster management framework gives us an opportunity to harness the same co-ordination we see during cyclones and other natural disasters.
“We can use that excellent response mechanism and apply it now to the vaccine roll-out.”
Community hubs were opened in Logan last week.
Deputy commissioner Chelepy emphasised the importance of people booking prior to arriving and if they make a booking, to make sure they keep it.
“We would particularly like to see those in the priority groups to make their booking and get vaccinated,” he said.
The booking process has been made simple and the Queensland Police Service has worked hard to ensure everyone has a positive experience when they arrive, he said.
