Logan sees peak in tick paralysis

Veterinarians are urging pet owners to keep a close eye on their pets as Logan sees a sudden rise in tick paralysis cases.

The team from Daisy Hill Vet said they are seeing an unusually high number of cats and dogs with ticks coming into the clinic.

“This is likely due to the current weather conditions being ideal for tick breeding,” a vet from the surgery said.

“In our experience, tick season is all year round with peaks and troughs, with a peak in tick paralysis cases occurring currently in Logan.”

The vet said Logan pet owners need to be prepared.

“Pet owners should perform regular tick searches by running their fingertips along their pet’s skin, paying close attention to the ears, neck and under the legs,” she said.

“Ticks love to hide here.

“Owners can prepare for tick season by keeping their preventatives up to date; it is important to understand exactly how long your preventative of choice protects against ticks and not letting it lapse.”

RSPCA Queensland chief veterinarian Dr Anne Chester said if you find a tick on your pet it’s important to act fast.

“Owners should check their pets every day for ticks and ensure they’re using tick preventatives like tick collars, spot on treatments or monthly chews,” she said.

“If you find a tick on your pet remove it with tweezers and get them to your vet for treatment, don’t delay.

“Especially if your pet is displaying any of the following symptoms: hind leg paralysis, vomiting or gagging, looks unsteady, staggering walk, difficulty breathing, dry cough or change in bark or meow or a disinterest in food.”

Dr Chester said it’s also important to note that some cats and dogs do not show the typical hind limb paralysis at first.

“Initially they may only exhibit a gurgling, choking cough, however their condition will quickly deteriorate.”

The team at Daisy Hill Vet said trimming your pet’s fur can help to locate ticks quicker and minimise the effects of toxins.

“It’s also important for owners to be aware that ticks are carried by wildlife, such as possums who can bring ticks into your backyard.

“Thus, they are most prevalent at dawn and dusk.”
