A group of PCYC Logan gymnasts could carry the city onto the world stage this year after winning state gold in their final qualifier before nationals.
The club’s Senior International Group won the Senior International Group category at the 2026 Senior State Championships at Logan Metro Sports and Events Centre, taking gold across two routines.
The rhythmic gymnastics team was also named overall state champion.
Coach Kerrie Mancini said the result put Logan athletes Elizabeth Lee, Mia Strachan, Brianna Parker, Trinity Ferrer-Bucal, Sofie Nugroho and Andrea Wang in a strong position heading into the 2026 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Sydney in July.
Mancini said nationals would be the key qualifier for world championships selection.
“Qualifying for nationals is another important step toward the group’s goal of representing Australia at the 2026 World Championships in Germany,” Mancini said.
“While the girls have already competed at world cups and international events, the national championships are the biggest event of the year for the group as they are the key qualifier for world championships selection.”
Mancini said the state result was significant for both the team and PCYC Logan.
“The girls delivered two very strong performances and it gives us a great foundation to build on moving forward,” she said.
“It was also especially rewarding to come out on top at the final qualifying event leading into nationals.”
Almost 300 gymnasts from across Queensland competed at the championships on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May, with athletes contesting trampoline, rhythmic and aerobic gymnastics events.
Mancini said the pathway for the senior group was clear.
“The next step is to perform strongly at nationals,” she said.
“Winning nationals and demonstrating consistency at the highest level will place the group in the strongest position for world championships selection.”
In a combined statement, the senior group said winning the state titles reflected the “blood, sweat and tears” they had put into training together.
“This result is a reward for all our hard work and dedication, and it has motivated us to keep improving our routines, increasing our scores, and striving for even more,” the group said.
“We are proud of what we have achieved, but we know there is still more to accomplish.
“Our next goal is to win at nationals in July and continue our journey towards representing Australia at the world championships in August.”
Mancini said the group stood out because of its teamwork and connection.
“They are not only talented athletes but also genuinely great friends who work incredibly well together,” she said.
“They support one another, train hard, and have built strong trust as a team, which really shows in their performances.”
PCYC Logan’s Junior International Group was also named 2026 state champion and will compete at nationals this year.
Mancini said the junior athletes had trained together since they were six years old and had long-term goals of representing Australia internationally in 2027 and qualifying for the 2027 Junior World Championships.
The junior group had recently been selected to represent Australia in Greece, but was unable to attend because of injury.
Mancini said the strength of the senior and junior groups reflected the depth of talent coming through PCYC Logan, where athletes range from 4 to 20 years old.
“It highlights the strong pathway within the club and the commitment of athletes striving to achieve at the highest level,” Mancini said.
