Logan City Council Division 12 candidates

Division 12 of Logan City Council includes: Beenleigh, Eagleby, and Mt Warren Park.

There are two candidates.
Karen Murphy

Name: Karen Murphy

Representing the community I have lived, worked, volunteered and raised my family in is an immense privilege and honour. I love Logan and over the last four years I have worked hard to get the job done for our local community.

As Councillor for Division 12, I have advocated strongly to get vital upgrades and funding for our community:

✓ Securing funding for a new 50 metre Olympic-sized pool at Beenleigh Aquatic Centre
✓ New clubhouse at Chris Green Park for our local soccer club
✓ $1 million for new and upgraded playgrounds at Doug Larsen Park
✓ Fought in Council to reopen and renovate the Eagleby Pool
✓ Upgraded community centres, footpaths, parks, safety cameras, traffic calming and more

On the 16th of March 2024, residents of Beenleigh, Eagleby and Mount Warren Park will have the opportunity to re-elect me as Councillor for Division 12 in Logan City Council.
With their support, I will continue to be their strong voice in Council.

In 250 words or less, tell us about yourself and your community
attributes.
My whole purpose for building, serving, activating and advocating for the community is to create positive experiences that allow individuals to feel more connected to our environment – our neighbourhoods and town. My volunteering includes serving as the P&C President for Beenleigh High, helping found the Beenleigh Community Garden, leading and organising flood recovery efforts, raising funds for various charities including those who care for the homeless, running youth programs, forming Beenleigh Business & Tourism Association to promote and advocate for local businesses, coaching a youth basketball team and much more.

Over the years I have helped raise hundreds of thousands for charities, brought thousands together for community events (such as A Very Dicken’s Christmas, Bigfoot Fest, business expos…), organised massive community working bees and more. All of this has been as a volunteer but with all that said, something that I’ve learned is that nothing I’ve done that has effectively helped the community has been done in isolation. My greatest attribute when it comes to community is in understanding people from all walks of life and having the ability and willingness to motivate and bring people together.

Why should people vote for you?
Because I will be a proactive councillor and not just a reactive one. I will be transparent and engage in real community consultation and not pseudo-consultation engaged in after decisions have been made. They will be voting for someone that knows how to listen. I’ve proven to be that type of person in my community work. They will be voting for someone who has proven over many many years to truly care about the community. People have seen me stand up for community needs. They have seen me fight for progress and raise my voice against issues that affect us negatively. They have seen me serve with all my might, covered in mud and sweat. Most of all, I understand that to improve our towns, takes a collective effort and bringing people together is what I do best.

What would you aim to deliver for your community?
Besides the usual maintenance of the town I want to help improve opportunities for small, local businesses. I want to activate our town with a strong placemaking vision. It doesn’t take millions and millions to do that. It takes creativity which I have and am surrounded by in abundance. I want to improve the accessibility of our parks and playgrounds, and make them more attractive not just for pedestrians but for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and prams. I also believe that we can assist state in crime prevention by promoting and ensuring a strong “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” (CPTED) agenda.

Why did you decide to run for council?
I threw my hat in the ring at the last minute for a couple of reasons. One was because nobody else had decided to run against our current councillor and I believe a strong democracy requires choice. Secondly, after being approached by many people who I respect, I came to realise that while our division has “held it together” okay over the last few years and the current councillor has done a fine job overall, our three towns (Eagleby, Beenleigh and Mt Warren Park) could do with a real injection of creative energy that I can provide. Everyone has a time and a place for stepping up to a task that requires their effort. I believe that the time and the place for me, is here and now.

What suburb do you live in?
Eagleby. I have also lived in Beenleigh and I have family in Mount Warren Park so I have connections to all 3 suburbs.

How long have you been in the area?
Off and on for much of my life. I have lived all over the world. When I was 12 we owned a family video store near to where the Hyperdome now sits. After moving away for a bit I came back 25 years ago and have remained here ever since.
