Logan business does us proud

When the going gets tough, Logan businesses get going! There’s much to be proud of here in Logan and when you look at how companies in Logan have responded to Covid-19, that is more than true.

Three Logan businesses have taken out awards, at this year’s Queensland Government supplier awards, known as the “Buy Queensland Awards”.

Three incredible stories of agility and determination saw Logan’s own Munster Services, Snap Fresh and MCP Health take out a third of the awards on offer.

No-one would say the past 22 months have been easy for business.

But it has also brought out the best in Queenslanders, and these three great operations are proof of what we can do here in Logan.

Faced with Covid restrictions, lock downs and the monumental task of keeping hundreds of Logan residents in work during the pandemic, they pivoted and found new opportunities, kept workers employed and the money flowing to families and our community.

Munster Services, headquartered in Slacks Creek picked up the Putting Queenslanders First Award for their work maintaining Queensland’s vital water and wastewater infrastructure.

A terrific example of Putting Queenslanders first, their “build local, buy local” policy saw them contribute directly to the creation of quality local jobs and support for the Logan community, growing from 30 employees in 2019 to more than 100 full time permanent employees in 2021, despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even better, they are training the next generation of Logan’s youth, with 21 trade apprentice and trainee programs that will exceed 45 by the end of this year.

MCP Health based in Berrinba, picked up the Delivering for Queensland Award, stepping up when asked to respond to the shortage of personal protective equipment as global supply chains ground to a halt last year, bringing in new machinery and raw materials to make all important surgical masks.

It built a custom clean room, retooled machinery, and retrained its team to make an industry best surgical mask, soon supplying Queensland Health.

In an incredible result, they now support 40 new full-time jobs.

MCP Health was also named highly commended in my Minister’s Buy Queensland award, along with local outfit Snap Fresh.

Snap Fresh in Crestmead is another terrific story, originally supplying ready-to-eat meals to the aviation business, when the pandemic hit it was forced to find new markets as airlines stopped flying.

To keep their staff in jobs, they pivoted to supply patient meals to Queensland Health and are implementing strategies including new water tanks, recycling methods and solar power to cut emissions and waste.

Incredibly the company supported families doing it tough by donating more than half a million excess food items or distribution to disadvantaged Queenslanders.

With the Palaszczuk Government’s nation leading Buy Queensland procurement approach, we are making sure more Queensland taxpayer dollars are invested with Queensland businesses like these three award winners.

As a result of the new policy, each year the Queensland Government invests more than $14 billion in goods and services and more to build and maintain infrastructure.

Statewide, more than 36,000 small and medium businesses now supply goods and services to the Queensland Government each year.

I am proud to say that 90 percent of all Queensland Government tenders are awarded to Queensland businesses and growing, because when we back Logan companies, they back Logan locals.
