Logan AFL ground best community field in Australia

Everleigh Sports Park at Greenbank has been named the AFL’s top community facility of the year.

Since its inception in 2019, the Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Award recognises best practice in community-football facility development across Australia.

The new $16 million park at Greenbank, which opened in 2023, now hosts games for hundreds of Aussie Rules footballers every week, and is home to the Greenbank Giants.

The venue features an MCG-sized AFL oval and junior field with four player changerooms, an umpire changeroom, first aid rooms, a club room, broadcast facility, spectator amenities, and a café.

It has also been used as a training ground for the Brisbane Lions.

The AFL’s head of Queensland and international, Trisha Squires, said Everleigh Sports Park played a crucial role in the growth of the game.

“We are thrilled a Queensland facility has been recognised with such a prestigious national award,” she said.

“Participation in our sport is rapidly growing in Queensland, and it is integral that our facilities keep pace to sustain this growth.

“Everleigh Sports Park lies in our western corridor, which has experienced a significant boom in participants over the past three years.

“The versatility of this venue caters to the diverse needs of our players, coaches, umpires and volunteers and will support further growth in the region.

“I would like to thank the City of Logan, Mirvac and the State and Federal governments for their support and collaboration on this project.”

Local politicians joined in on the celebrations, with federal Wright MP Scott Buchholz labelling the park a “first class” facility.

“It’s fresh, it’s functional, and it’s built for the future, exactly what our growing region needs. The communities in and around Everleigh are expanding rapidly, and quality infrastructure like this plays a critical role in building connections, promoting active lifestyles, and supporting young talent,” he said.

“Congratulations to everyone involved, this is a win for our community, and a great sign of what’s to come for the wider Logan region.”

State Member for Logan, Linus Power, said the award was a proud moment for the community.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work, vision, and dedication of everyone involved – from club volunteers to council, state government and other supporters.

“Facilities like this don’t just support our local AFL teams – they bring people together, encourage healthy lifestyles, and build a strong community spirit.”

“This project will leave a lasting sporting legacy for Logan and shows what is possible when everyone works together for a common purpose.”
