Local youth celebrated with special week

The hundreds of young people in Logan who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless are not alone.

Between organisations like YFS and an under-construction apartment complex at Beenleigh, the city’s most vulnerable young people have growing support.

This past week was Queensland Youth Week, a celebration of our young people’s talents, achievements, and contributions.

Logan celebrated with a full day of fun at Rowan Park in Slacks Creek, including music, creative workshops, food, wildlife enclosures, volleyball and Uball.

Eight local organisations, ranging from family and disability support services, to charities and even a barbershop, helped run the event.

Tina Tarawhiti, a team leader at Bridges Reconnect – a Woodridge-based program offering early-intervention programs, referrals, counselling, and training to teenagers facing homelessness – said Youth Week was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the younger members of Logan.

“Our teens face many challenges and community groups like Bridges Reconnect are passionate about supporting these young people and their families,” Ms Tarawhiti said.

“Bridges Reconnect provides programs for Logan youth aged 12 to 18 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and early intervention initiatives to foster more positive relationships with their family and the community.

“We support around 85 young people every year who face disengagement from school and conflict with friends and family by providing tailored services to help them continue education, gain employment and rebuild relationships.”

Bridges Reconnect hosted a stall at the Youth Shine event, providing activities, a popular popcorn machine and information on their community services.
