The skatepark at McKinnon Sports Park South at Yarrabilba is being expanded to cater for more experienced skaters.
The first part of the skatepark opened earlier this year with a beginner level area and the next stage of construction has officially begun with this section more catered to an intermediate level, councillor responsible for Yarrabilba Nathan St Ledger said.
This new area will feature a quarter-pipe transitions with balustrades, a 2.1m roll-in and a slanted box jump with roll-in.
Cr St Ledger says he would love to see it finished this year.
The design for the intermediate area was done in consultation with local professional riders, who Cr St Ledger says are world class.
He has been working with Skate Australia chief executive officer Alex Anasson and says she saw how the first part of the skatepark was progressing earlier this year, along with a representative from the Australian Olympic Committee.
Cr St Ledger said the community had reacted positively to the implementation of the skatepark.
“It is getting really well used,” Cr St Ledger said.
Social media comments show some people in the community oppose the skatepark and believe it will become a hotspot for youth crime.
Cr St Ledger said: “We need places for our youth to be active and do positive things.
“We shouldn’t be not delivering these projects for the wider community because of the poor behaviour of a few.”
