Kimberley takes a practical look at learning

Situated in a semi-rural bush setting at Carbrook, Kimberley College provides students with a calm and stress-free campus environment in which to learn and grow. Catering for prep to year 12, the co-educational, non-denominational school takes a holistic approach to education.

Kimberley College offers senior students (years 10 – 12) a variety of pathways to help each student successfully prepare for the workforce of the future. Principal, Glenn Johnson said “It is essential to cater for a wide variety of career ambitions and to support our students with the appropriate study courses, apprenticeships, and work experience. Students need a broad set of transferrable skills to be able to thrive once they finish school.”

Increasingly, in a world of constant change, students are looking to commence vocational studies, apprenticeships, and traineeships while still at school and to be able to jump start their career and gain valuable experience. Embedded within the Kimberley College mission is the desire to help students find both their purpose and passion and Kimberly College is committed to finding the right pathway for each individual student. The College currently has more than 100 senior students across year 11 and 12 enrolled in the TAFE at School program in 2023.

Kimberley College year 11 student, Takai Hola is currently undertaking a school-based apprenticeship while completing a Certificate 3 in Mens Hairdressing and Barbering. Each Monday morning, Takai, heads to local business, Made 2 Fade at Alexandra Hills to work in the barbershop for the day where he is learning how to cut hair, face shave and valuable customer service skills. Originally encouraged by his grandmother, Takai enjoys talking to the regular customers, being able to express himself artistically and the practical nature of learning how to do the job.

Takai’s mother Kristy said “Since starting the school-based apprenticeship, Takai has really matured, he is much more business aware. It has pushed him out of his comfort zone and developed his communication skills. I am pleased he has had the opportunity to start his apprenticeship while still completing his senior studies.”

In addition to university ATAR studies, Kimberley College offers a range of VET programs for senior students from a Certificate 1 in Construction to a Diploma of Business delivered onsite at the school. This year, close to 20, Year 12 students successfully graduated with the Diploma in Business in addition to completing their QCE. These students also have the bonus of leveraging their Diploma of Business and may be to apply for direct entry into select courses on offer at QUT and Griffith universities.
