James Brown embraces diversity in debut exhibition

James Brown is a local artist with the ambition of showcasing his artwork in Logan.

Unfortunately, the limited galleries in Logan lack the space for him and the other 20 artists in the Brisbane Arts Collective to display their pieces.

“Maybe this is an impotus for Logan City Council to take a step forward,” Mr Brown said.

“They do a lot – I’m not knocking them. The Gallery in Woodridge is excellent, but unfortunately it’s so full that it’s difficult to get space for an exhibition.”

So now Mr Brown and a collective of artists have taken their exhibition of over 100 artworks, titled ‘Embracing Diversity’, to the Petrie Terrace Gallery in Brisbane.

Despite the lack of galleries, Mr Brown is proud to be collaborating with locals and said Logan has a “good and growing art scene.”

“The pandemic hit the creative sector hard, so it is encouraging to see so many artists come together.

“We hope people have the chance to come along and support our local talent.”

According to the group, the collection of works will aim to embrace “all people, irrespective of difference.”

Mr Brown said that audiences will see “some of [the Collective’s] best work” and a collaboration of various artistic styles.

Mr Brown has been a resident of Browns Plains for over 40 years, and said Logan has been an influence in his art.

“Art is a reflection of one’s life experiences,” he said.

“Logan is a city designed for working people – it has no pretentions.

“There is such a diversity of people in Logan – it is a multicultural society.”

The theme of the exhibition is “diversity”, a notion that Mr Brown says is essential “for a safe and fullfiling and enriching future.”

“Diversity is one of the big words in our times… there is so much of it – socially, culturally, politically,” Mr Brown said.

More than 100 artworks from 20 Logan and Brisbane artists will be showcased.

Some works will be for sale.

Entry is free, although gold coin donations will be accepted.

The exhibition will be open Wednesday 15 March (opening night) from 7-10pm; Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 March from 10am – 6pm; and Sunday 19 March from 10am – 3.30pm.
