Your article in MyCity Logan (June 7-13) makes an interesting point about food co-ops.
From what I can gather, these places are run by charities or churches and there is a perception that they’re only open to the type of people who might struggle to meet a means test.
In my own household, I run a budget and I like to think I am contributing fairly to society when it comes to doing the right thing.
But your article made me think. If what you say is right and these co-ops really are for everybody, I thought I’d take a trip down to the one you mentioned in Meadowbrook.
I must say, I can’t speak highly enough of the people who served me. They couldn’t have been more accommodating, they helped me find a couple of things I was looking for, and at no point did they question why I was there.
They helped when they needed to, and then left me to get about filling my shopping cart.
It wasn’t a supermarket, so they didn’t have everything that I would normally buy, but they sure did have most of what I would need for my weekly shop.
I want to thank the lovely people at Authentic Church for the work they are doing in their co-op. I must say I really didn’t think I’d qualify, so I’m glad I took your advice to have a look.
I think I saved about $20 on my normal weekly shop, which was a great help. I’ll now be able to spend it on something else.
Thanks to the wonderful service and the hard work these people are doing for our community, I’ll be back for sure.
