How to help your community

Police are asking a what you do to work together as a community.

“It is the willingness to alert local police to community problems and working together directly to intervene which improves our neighbourhoods and builds a safer environment for everyone to live and work,” local police said in a statement.

“Are you aware that small items with a good re-sale value are often opportunistic targets for theft as they can be quickly sold or disposed of?

“Property including laptop computers, tablets, cameras, smartphones and power tools should be secured out of sight along with your house and car keys, wallets, purses or bags.”

They then listed a number things we can do to deter thieves or a break in at our house or neighbourhood.

They are:

  • Getting to know your neighbours by exchanging telephone numbers and keeping an eye on each other’s homes.
  • Engaging in your local community, participate in community safety programs, consider joining your local Neighbourhood Watch group, subscribe to myPolice Logan https://mypolice.qld.gov.au/logan/
  • Keeping up to date on what is going on in your neighbourhood and community via local council, Queensland government or Crime Stoppers Queensland https://www.crimestoppersqld.com.au/
  • Being mindful that local crime and community watch websites provide information but the best way to reduce prowling, loitering and burglaries is by reporting suspicious people or vehicles to Policelink online.
  • Locking external doors and windows even when you are home or out in the yard to avoid ‘sneak’ offences
  • Identifying vulnerable areas of your home to theft and increasing security measures using the Home security guide.
  • Engraving or marking your property which can assist in property recovery.
  • Securely storing garden equipment and tools which can be used to break into your home, business or vehicle away from sight.
  • Avoiding hiding a spare house key where it can be easily found, instead giving it to a trusted friend or neighbour.
  • Being mindful of the location of your wheelie bins as they can be used to climb over your fence or gates.

“Let’s all work together to deter crime and keep our community safe,” police said.
