COLOUR, colour everywhere is an apt way to describe The Gallery in the Corridor at the Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum in Main Street.
Probably most striking are numerous artworks in acrylic of the rainbow lorikeet, probably Australia’s best known parrot after the galah and the sulphur-crested cockatoo.
The lorikeet’s striking multi-coloured plumage make it an obvious subject for any artist who wants to paint a colourful example of Queensland wildlife.
That is exactly the case with Kristy Flynn, one of the volunteer artists who keep the gallery running smoothly.
“I can’t keep up with the demand for rainbow lorikeets but I do other birds and animals as well,” she said.
The gallery is housed in five rooms of Harry Saverin’s weatherboard family home which was built in Beenleigh’s Tasey Street around 1900 and was relocated to the village in 2000.
The building retains its original hoop-pine floors and structured arches and fretwork which make it an artwork in itself.
In 2013 a group of local artists asked the village board if they could set up a gallery, which was officially opened in December that year.
The way the gallery works is fairly simple with each of the 18 participating artists able to display their unique works, which include landscapes, floral themes and portrats on a wall in one of the rooms.
The artists man the gallery on a seven-days-a-week roster basis and each is responsible for ensuring that the artworks on their walls are attractively displayed.
The “corridor” reference in the gallery’s name came about because when it was established there were no galleries of note between Brisbane and the Gold Coast – it was an empty corridor for art galleries and there was no place showcasing local original, distinctive and quality artwork.
As swell as paintings the gallery is a thriving artistic hub where prints, wooden creations, hand-made pottery, jewellery, craft items and historical vintage collectables are displayed, with everything available to be purchased on lay-by for Christmas.
Moves are afoot to dedicate one room to the Logan Artists Association, classes for beginner artists are held and a “Colours speak louder than words” exhibition is planned for next year.
