Great new memorial at Park Ridge

On Saturday February 11, the Park Ridge community marked the 50th anniversary of the Park Ridge Water Tower, with the unveiling of a new Anzac mural, which now adorns the iconic structure, along the Mount Lindesay Highway.

The piece is entitled “Reflection Under Southern Stars” and depicts an Anzac soldier and nurse, wrapping around the tower.

The two are both silently reflecting on their service to their country under the banner of our national flag.

The location of the Water Tower has its own special place in our ANZAC history, with Park Ridge being home to an airfield during the Second World War.

The airstrip ran along what is now Chambers Flat Road, cutting through the bush to Park Ridge Road.

Utilised as a training ground for pilots, troops and airmen, its development was brought on quite quickly in response to the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941 and the War turning to the Pacific, with construction completed in 1942.

A stunning piece, the mural was created by artists Liang Rahner and Paul Turnbull, taking 10 weeks to complete.

It was delightful to see their children join in helping to cut the ribbon at the mural’s opening to the public.

The unveiling itself was a terrific event, which included performances by young local artists, Nate and Jasmine from Assorted Grains, who entertained the crowd with a range of Australian songs.

I was honoured to have the opportunity to speak at the event, which the weather was perfect for.

The blue skies and sunny weather really provided the most opportune backdrop for the murals, allowing them to be appreciated at their best.

I want to also thank local councillor for Division 8, Jacob Heremaia, who successfully lobbied and advocated for the council funding that went toward the project.

My sincere congratulations to everyone involved on what is a fantastic addition to our local Logan community.

I urge all readers to stop by and check out this wonderful artwork the next time they’re in Park Ridge.
