Conservative lobbyist Bernard Gaynor has made ground in his crusade against “pornographic books” in Logan libraries.
Since February, Mr Gaynor has campaigned and protested against se veral books on library shelves allegedly containing child pornography and bestiality.
Following these complaints, Logan City Council removed some of the books, including Gender Queer: A Memoir and several volumes of The Boys, from library shelves.
Wanting more, Mr Gaynor reported the matter to police, prompting the Australian Classification Board to conduct a review of the books.
Much to Mr Gaynor’s satisfaction, the ACB has now classified volumes one, three and five of The Boys: Omnibus as “Category 1 Restricted”.
Category 1 Restricted publications “contain images of sexualised nudity” or sexually explicit content and cannot be sold to minors.
But under Queensland law, these publications cannot be sold to anyone – regardless of age.
Mr Gaynor said he was not surprised by the ACB’s finding and would continue on his crusade.
He was distressed to find Gender Queer had returned to library shelves.
At the beginning of April, the ACB classified Gender Queer: A Memoir as “unrestricted, with consumer advice of ‘M (Mature) – not recommended for readers under 15 years”.
Although Mr Gaynor said he would appeal the finding, the book is back in Logan libraries.
He said he would continue to campaign against “inappropriate material” in public libraries, and wanted to hold council responsible.
“Council has a duty of care before they put these books on the shelf,” Mr Gaynor said.
“It’s not good enough.”
