Former car yard becomes $27m one-stop shop

A “one stop shop” said to be the first of its kind in Slacks Creek has opened.

The block, 200 Kingston Road, was once the site of a used car yard, but has undergone a $27 million facelift and is now tipped to be economic hub.

The mixed-use site is set on the corner of Slacks Creek industrial precinct, and includes a United Petrol Fuel Station, Slim’s Quality Burger Drive Thru – one of the first in Queensland – and a 1113sqm office space called the Junction.

There is also a 40-car basement, 10 other food and beverage tenancies and a barbershop, with five tenancies left to be filled.

“We’re excited, given that it was an old car yard,” Churchill Development Group general manager Ben Bailey said.

“We have delivered something that is quite unique – it is not just a food convenience centre – with the office space, it has a business element.

“We’re looking at the services tenancies as well, whether it is beauty and massage or things like that to tie into it.”

Mr Bailey said the group viewed the development as an economic hub, with the offices able to house up to 250 people.

“… which we think Logan needs a bit more of,” he said.

“Especially along that street where there are still a lot of industrial, dirty old fuel stations and things like that.

“Mum and dad businesses are used to having much older tenancies within Logan, where this is a little different and allows them to showcase their business.”

The Underwood Innovation Lab (UIL), Australia’s only independent, government backed innovation lab, has moved into the centre.

The offices start at $700 per month fully furnished, including business-grade internet, meeting and boardroom access, printing allowances, and kitchen amenities.

Construction of the complex finished in December 2024, and took two and a half years.

“It probably took about a year longer than it should have,” Mr Bailey said.

“The post-Covid world was tough for everyone in construction.

“We saw concrete and steel go up by 50%, we had labour shortages on the back of that, and during construction we had plenty of rain and wet weather as well.

“It was tough going.”

Churchill Development Group’s executive director Jonathan Leishman said completing the project in such challenging circumstances was a credit to the team.

He said there was a “real demand” for the centre, including The Junction.

“Our serviced office offering as suburban coworking in this post-COVID environment continues to be attractive for both flexible office workers and startups,” he said.

“We are excited to work with YoCo as the operator of our serviced office business The Junction Coworking.

“It has been a unique addition to the development sitting within what is essentially a convenience centre, but we have already seen the benefits of coupling serviced offices with good quality amenity via the takeup of our office tenancies.”
