Five-year community centre battle of survival comes to end

A five-year battle to save a “perfectly sound” community centre at Rochedale South has come to an end.

Logan City Council contractors are expected to start demolishing the vacant Nerida Street community centre on 30 June.

The building was oncethe base for Blue Care and the local Meals on Wheels kitchen. But now the land, owned by the council, is being sold to the Queensland government.

Rod Shaw, the current president of the Logan Ratepayers Association and former president of the Rochedale Springwood Meals on Wheels, said the centre had been “wasted” the past five years and could have been used as a domestic violence or homeless shelter.

The local council has in the past explained that the community centre could not be used for “habitable purposes” without modifications being made to the building and a change in classification.

Mr Shaw said those upgrades would have been worth it.

The local councillor, Lisa Bradley, said in a post online that the works formed part of a “broader long-term strategy that enabled a new community centre at Underwood Park”.

“As part of the sale to the State Government, the community centre is required to be demolished,” she said.

“On a personal note, I wanted to ensure the materials from the old Nerida Street building were recycled, which I am pleased to say will be happening.

“Works will be confined to the block located at 19-31 Nerida Street and should not impact surrounding properties, though minimum noise disruption and dust should be expected.”
