Beenleigh locals will have a special opportunity to celebrate NAIDOC week with the Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal Dance Company, a local group preserving the traditions of south-east Queensland Indigenous culture.
Tomorrow (Wednesday 5 July) the dance troupe will host a First Nations story-telling workshop at Beenleigh Marketplace, from 10-11am.
The group’s cultural officer, Aaron Ruska, said the workshop would feature “stories that have been passed down for generations that connect to our tribal groups from this area”.
He said prior to the workshop there would be a performance by a didgeridoo master.
“[It will be] a step by step demonstration on how we collect and play the didgeridoo, and stories of its origin,” Mr Ruska said.
The Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal Dance Company just hosted the Indigenous Wild Foods and Cultural Festival at Rocklea on Sunday (2 July).
They have been performing and teaching in the area for more that 25 years.
“Nunukul Yuggera started in the early 90s and was set up to provide our Indigenous youth with an opportunity to connect to their roots and family groups,” Mr Ruska said.
“Our mission was to keep youth off the steeets and onto a right path.”
