Fear of rising rates charges

Council has begun budget talks amid the pressures of rising costs.

The fear in the community is that council will look to pass costs on in the form of hefty rate increases.

“Over the past year, increased inflation through the soaring cost of electricity and construction materials has impacted the bottom line,” mayor Darren Power said.

“As an organisation, Council is facing the same pressures of sharply rising costs that local residents and businesses are experiencing.”

In February, inflation increased at a lower rate than previous months.

Last month, inflation increased by 6.8 per cent, lower than the 7.4 per cent increase in January and the 8.4 per cent in December.

Although this does not secure stability when it comes to rates, it may influence the council’s decision.

“We will work hard to explore every possible approach to funding the delivery of infrastructure and services to the community as well as exploring partnership opportunities that we can tap into,” Governance Chair Karen Murphy said.

“I expect we’ll have many robust discussions over the coming months to ensure thebest possible outcome for our community.”

The Logan City Council’s 2023/2024 budget will be adopted on 19 June.
