The Logan House Fire Support Network has shut its doors after a decade of service to the local community because of apparent complications dealing with the state government.
The organisation provided emergency accommodation, housing, furnishing and other forms of assistance to people impacted by house fires in Logan, Ipswich, Redlands, and the Scenic Rim.
Created by Louie Naumovski and Christine Richards, the support group emerged after a devastating house fire in Slacks Creek in 2011 that left 11 people dead.
It became a not-for-profit in 2014 and shortly afterwards Mr Naumovski and Ms Richards began lobbying the government to mandate photoelectric smoke alarms in Queensland households – a legislation that passed in 2016.
They said the milestone was “one of the most satisfying nights of their lives”.
But the group closed its doors on 30 June this year because of difficulties operating with and getting assistance from the state government, said Mr Naumovski.
Local MP for Forde Bert van Manen, a supporter of the organisation, recently addressed the Logan House Fire Support Network’s closure at federal parliament.
“Mr Naumosvki said the announcement to close has been forced due to escalating difficulties in dealing with the Queensland state Labor government, and also the policies within Queensland Fire and Emergency Services,” Mr van Manen said.
“One of their greatest achievements was when Logan House Fire Support Network lobbied the Queensland government to mandate photoelectric smoke alarms… and I believe that we are a safer community as a result.
“Logan House Fire Support Network also created the Woodridge Santa run, which is on Christmas day every year.
“Fire trucks, police, ambulance and emergency vehicles would drive through the streets of Logan handing out lollies, toys and presents to those who could not afford it.”
Mr van Manen said he hoped another person or organisation would “take up this mantle”.
“Our local community is richer, more knowledgeable and safer for having had Logan House Fire Support Network as part of our wider local community, and I would like to thank Louie and Christine for their efforts since the charity started back in 2014,” he said.
