Officers in Logan are going to continue focusing on road safety in the lead up to Christmas.
Police say this year has been filled with unusual and difficult times for many Queenslanders and unfortunately, to add to these challenges, we have also seen a shocking increase in serious crashes and fatalities on our roads.
In Logan especially, we have seen a significant increase in the number of fatal road incidents compared to last year, but Christmas is just around the corner and border points within the Scenic Rim are now open, they said.
Operation Sierra Noella, scheduled to run through to Friday, January 29, will see an increase in police on Queensland roads, actively engaging with motorists to encourage safe driving practices.
Officer in Charge of Logan District Road Policing Unit, Acting Senior Sergeant Darren Smith said that Logan officers will be noticeably visible on roads in the Logan District throughout the Christmas period.
“We have seen far too many preventable crashes on Queensland roads this year, with over 200 people now unable to come home for Christmas,” Acting Senior Sergeant Smith said.
“We will continue to hone in on our road safety messages, reminding motorists to take it easy and to practise safe driving behaviours.
“Our primary objective as we do this, is to reduce the number of fatal and serious traffic crashes we not only experiencing in Logan, but throughout the rest of the state as well.
“Simply make good choices and make sure you, your passengers and your fellow road users get to your destinations safely, no matter where you’re headed.”
Police in Logan will be patrolling from our borders to our highways, our suburban roads and our tourist drives and will be conducting roadside operations to reinforce the road rules designed to keep everyone safe – including the loved ones in your vehicle and the strangers sharing the road with you.
The police of Logan have already been putting the spotlight on road safety as part of Operation Own It, and this Christmas period will be no exception as they work together with police in the rest of the state.
“We simply cannot accept further fatal road incidents this year, so we are asking all Logan residents and those travelling through Logan to take it easy and make good choices on the roads throughout the holidays,” police said.
“Speed is such a huge contributing factor to serious road incidents in our district. Take your time to get to your destination and enjoy the drive rather than speeding to get there.
“Avoiding the rest of Fatal Five is such a simple way to promote your own and your passengers’ safety on the road.”
- Absolutely do not drive if you are affected by alcohol or drugs. Make alternative arrangements to get home if you are going to be consuming alcohol.
- The people at your destination would rather you be late than never arrive at all.
- Always, always wear a seatbelt.
- Don’t touch your phone and don’t get distracted by pets or other passengers whilst driving.
- Even if you’ve had a big day or night, don’t drive when you are tired.
Unsecured loads are dangerous. On all roads. And particularly the motorway.
If you’re tidying up around home throughout the Summer break and headed to the dump or carting a huge amount of Christmas presents home for the kids in the ute, make sure you are properly securing your load.
It’s your responsibility to ensure that whatever you’re carrying stays within your vehicle. It doesn’t take much speed for a loose item to fly away and cause some serious damage on impact.
Ultimately, your local police want you to drive safe and to arrive safe.
Logan Police want everyone to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas. Enjoy the school holidays!
