Just after 1am on January 1, Ella Harpur Rowe was born Logan’s first baby of the year.
When she starts going to playgroups and schools, the odds say she’ll be surrounded by a Mia or two, Olivia, Ava and Violet.
Hospital records say they were the most popular names of 2020, a year many new parents will remember with joy amid the turmoil of a pandemic, recession and uncertainty.
Ella was an early sign of a new beginning for parents Jesse and Jade Rowe of Berrinba who said they knew they were having a girl and were feeling joyful about the birth of their first child.
It might seem Ella was keen to greet the new year, due January 15, but born a healthy 4270 grams.
Mr and Mrs Rowe said they didn’t think they’d have a new year’s baby, but did think at one point it might be new year’s eve.
They thanked the maternity staff at Logan Hospital who in 2020 greeted more than 3000 babies into the world.
And they saw parents go through the name game, choosing Elijah and Braxton as the most popular boys’ names for the year.
Mia was the most popular name for girls.
It won’t be long before babies named Lucas, Oliver and Noah will be heard in playgrounds alongside Lucas, Oliver and Noah as equal third most popular pick, followed by Theodore, Ezekial, Ryder, Charlie, Mason, Levi, Harvey, Hudson, Thomas and James.
For girls, Mia and Olivia were the favoured names, followed by Ava, Violet, Sophia, Charlotte, Eliana, Lily, Amelia, Chloe, Willow, Everleigh and Ivy.
Olivia was this year’s second most popular girls name followed by a five-way tie for fourth place which included Ava, Violet, Sophia, Charlotte and Eliana.
A Logan Hospital spokesperson said the Logan population has a high proportion of residents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and birthing mothers of Maori and Pacific Island descent account for over 30% of all births at the hospital.
