On May 16, 2009, Judy Lindsay received a phone call that no parent should receive, one that changed her life forever. Her daughter, 20 year-old Hayley Russell, was tragically killed in a serious crash only a few kilometres from home.
That night, a driver made the decision to get behind the wheel drunk. A decision that turned a normal night out into a tragedy.
To raise awareness for road safety, Judy has shared her story about how one person’s actions behind the wheel impacted her life, and her family’s life forever.
“My family and I still struggle – 11 years later, I’m watching Hayley’s friends who are now making lives of their own, getting married and having children. Because of someone’s actions that night, I will never have this opportunity,” Judy said.
Sadly, Judy isn’t alone.
Her story is one of the many reasons Logan Police want to help make sure no one else dies as a result of drink or drug driving.
Expect to see police around our borders, on our highways, around licensed premises, at parties, and on suburban streets, particularly into the Christmas and New year period to target drink and drug affected drivers.
Officers in Logan are continuing to put the spotlight on road safety, particularly the Fatal Five.
Drink and drug driving is one of the simplest things to avoid to enhance your own and other road users’ safety.
Drink and drug driving doesn’t have to just be about the driver though. It’s up to us to also look out for our family and our friends too.
Don’t let them drive if they are alcohol or drug affected. Instead, help them get home safely.
