SADLY, our community recently witnessed another horrific incident of domestic violence that resulted in two deaths.
That’s why the federal government has prioritised tackling domestic violence and women’s issues, and one of the most successful local initiatives has been the Spark program.
Spark is a Women’s Employment Mentoring Program, an initiative run by Youth and Family Service (YFS) with support from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s Office for Women.
I joined my LNP colleague Senator Amanda Stoker recently for an update on the program at YFS Logan, where we met two of the more than 150 people who have received assistance.
Single mum Christina told us her story, which included her escape from a cult and a debilitating stroke that left her paralysed and unable to speak.
Helen described her escape from domestic violence and her struggle to start afresh from scratch.
These women are amazingly resilient and have overcome obstacles that are unimaginable to most of us. This is where YFS and the Spark program can provide support.
YFS works with everyone in Logan City including children and young people, families, adult men and women, young mothers and young men, older people, people with a disability, and people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
YFS assists people to build their livelihoods and to sustain their emotional, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing.
Their services include, dealing with domestic violence; youth education and training; early childhood support; families and relationships; housing and tenancy; youth legal services; community health services; and the Logan Legal Advice Centre.
If you live in Logan City and you need any of these services, or perhaps you need assistance but are unsure where to start, I recommend that you get in touch with YFS.
