Couple ties the knot at work

Kevin Landles and Mary Thompson love their workplace so much they wanted to share one of the most important days of their lives with its residents.

Mr Landles is the residence manager at Arcare Slacks Creek, and Ms Thompson is the clinical lead.

Earlier this month, they decided that aged care residents had missed a number of celebrations and special events due to lockdowns.

“When we were planning for our delayed wedding, we thought that this may be an opportunity to be married in front of those we care for and those we work alongside,” Mr Landles said.

The couple were planning to get married in 2021, but plans were put on hold after their son was involved in a motorcycle accident.

“For the residents, we hope that they feel a part of our extended family, they recognise the value that we place on them and they can use the day to reminisce on their own happy memories over the years. After all, everyone loves a party!”

The couple has been together three years and have worked alongside each other for more than 10 years at multiple aged care residences.

The wedding was a fusion of Scottish and Maori cultures as it featured bagpipes, traditional Scottish kilts, a Māori Haka from the bride’s family and traditional Māori dress (consisting of the kurawai, patu and feathered headband).

After the ceremony, food and drinks were served.
