Construction begins at Loganlea station while others still in community consultation

Construction has begun on Loganholme station, one of seven other Logan train stations that will receive upgrades as part of the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail Project between Kuraby and Beenleigh.

But an anxious wait continues for at least two communities, for different reasons.

In Beenleigh, properties in the town’s centre and along George and James Street have been resumed, and offices remain empty.

As a result of community feedback, which emphasised the need for track straightening and station accessibility, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) announced in 2023 that they would move Beenleigh station 650m north of its current location to James and Victoria Streets.

Originally, TMR had proposed the station would be moved 200m south of its current location.

Designs for the Beenleigh and Holmview station upgrades are yet to be finalised.

Community consultation for Edens Landing’s station upgrades opened last week, and will close on 22 March, TMR announced.

Member for Woodridge Cameron Dick, who funded the station upgrades in his role as state Treasurer from 2020 to 2024, said it was pleasing to see the projects continue to receive support from the government.

But he said the current state government had rolled back the planned upgrades to rail sections in the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail Project.

“Removing the section from Woodridge train station to Kingston train station is a really bad outcome,” Mr Dick said.

“It will mean more cars on the road and will make it harder for locals, particularly young people, to get around.”

Mr Dick said the funding needed to complete the project in full was available to the state government.

“The active transport route is ready to go and must be delivered in full,” Mr Dick said.

A spokesperson for TMR said Mr Dick’s assessment was not accurate and that there had been no change to the active transport route, which Mr Dick said had been rolled back.

At Trinder Park station in Woodridge, residents have been waiting 40 years since one of the state’s most horrific train crashes claimed the lives of two people, a train driver and passenger, and injured more than 30 others after two trains crashed in 1985.

A bend in the track between Compton Road and Trinder Park station is set to be straightened as part of the upgrade.

Two tracks between Beenleigh and Kuraby will also be increased to four tracks

According to TMR documentation, the 20km of widened tracks won’t be fully open for business until 2032, just in time for the Brisbane Olympics.

Upgrades to Trinder Park station will include new lifts, straightened and raised passenger platforms, hearing loops, accessible car parking, and pick up and drop off zones.

A new car park will be built on Candish Street, according to TMR.

TMR said these upgrades are designed to improve the safety, accessibility and connectivity of the Trinder Park station.

Currently, Trinder Park’s level crossing between Railway Parade and Station Road, in Woodridge, is being removed by construction teams.

A new road bridge for cars to cross the railway line will be built, connecting Acacia Road to Railway Parade.

TMR said walking and cycling routes would also be built around Smith Road, Railway Parade and Acacia Road.

Construction has started on a new train station opposite Logan Hospital, while updated redevelopment plans for Edens Landing station have been released for public feedback.

The new Loganlea station is being built 500m south of the existing station, opposite Logan Hospital, to bring it closer to health and education facilities, including TAFE Queensland’s Loganlea campus and Loganlea State High School.

The project will include two platforms, a new station building, a pedestrian footbridge, park ‘n’ ride facilities and changes to surrounding roads.

The existing station will remain open until the new site is completed, which is expected in 2027.

The wider Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail program includes upgrades to the Beenleigh, Bethania, Edens Landing, Holmview, Kingston, Loganlea, Trinder Park and Woodridge stations.

The updated design proposal for construction at the Edens Landing station, now open for public consultation, repositions the station with Eddy Avenue.

It includes changes to walking and cycling links, new bus stops, expanded parking and drop off areas and a pedestrian bridge linking Houdini Terrace and Holmview Road.

The finalised designs for Holmview and Beenleigh’s station preccincts where level crossings will also be removed, are expected to be released in the coming months.

MyCity Logan reached out to TMR’s media department for an exact timeline of construction at the stations in Logan, but did not receive a response by the publishing deadline.
