A few weeks ago, we reviewed the recently-opened Kaikai Chicken buffet which had sprung up in Springwood and exceeded all expectations.
Chicken wing buffets seem to be a trend. This time, we found a newly-opened version making its way onto the scene at Underwood.
Bufwin is in the shopping strip next to Big Gun, and they’ve put considerable thought into decking out the small dine-in area. There’s even a projector which plays music onto the wall, something you might expect in a much larger venue.
Regardless, the projector provides some atmosphere. Tables are neat and service generally friendly.
On the downside, it’s small, with room to seat about 20 inside, and more outside which will be great in Summer.
When we went, Bufwin’s advertised “beer and wings” wasn’t quite what we expected as they hadn’t yet received their alcohol license.
So, no beer or cocktails. But still a buffet which includes unlimited iced tea, french fries and eight flavours of chicken.
One of the issues with such a small venue and a buffet is that tables tend to turn over far less quickly than they would in a cafe with a similar style of food.
This is because people tend to want to enjoy their allotted 90 minutes in order to fill up – or at least 60 minutes.
In our case, on a popular Wednesday night, there was a queue about 45 minutes into the meal. The solution from those looking after the restaurant was to bring out the ice cream dessert before we had the chance to make our way through the chicken.
Never mind. It’s all about the quality of the chicken, right?
The wings here are medium-sized and deep fried in oil with a crispy coating. There’s chicken salt, Thai sweet chilli, barbecue, cheese, honey soy, hot sauce, Korean sweet and spicy sauce, and honey wasabi.
If the buffet’s not your thing, there’s a well-priced a la carte and takeaway menu, which includes the option to order seven, 12 or 21 wings, and there are three types of chicken burger.
Karaage chicken is fried chicken with rice, and there’s a cutlet option, each for $12.90.
There are jalapeno bites, spring rolls and fried rice cake for entree, and a range of drinks which will likely be available when the licensing process plays out (if not already, this review was completed July 20).
The price is right, and the concept is certainly growing in popularity.
