Two-dollar entry to public pools could be on the cards for Logan.
But it won’t be happening this summer.
One of our neighbours, Brisbane, charges residents only a couple of bucks to use its pools.
Adults in Logan pay as much as $6.50.
This has caused quite the stir online, with many locals calling on council to charge less.
While cheaper entry has appealed to many people without private pools, subsidising entry fees would be costly to ratepayers due to Logan City Council’s current lease arrangements.
“Doing something like this at short notice would not only cost ratepayers a fortune but we’d need to try and secure additional lifeguards and staff as well,” mayor Jon Raven said.
“Brisbane is the only Council in SEQ that is offering $2 pool entry.
“When they first did this last year, we investigated if this was something we could also do under our current lease arrangements.
“The answer is that yes, it’s possible, but very expensive.”
Council has already started a process of adopting a similar service agreement to Brisbane.
Cr Raven said this meant meant cheaper entry fees could be considered in the future.
“The community has told me that right now they want Council to focus on delivering infrastructure and keeping rates as low as possible – so that’s my priority right now,” he said.
