Caddies to make new impact on community

Caddies was put on life support after Able Australia closed its doors in September.

Now, theres a pulse.

Logan organisation Impact Care Services will operate the centre, with a soft opening of their food bank on 17 December.

Impact Services Project Manager Heath Henwood was eager to start helping the community, after a few hurdles have delayed the official opening.

“Unfortunately, the transition between managers in the centre has taken a lot longer than anyone ever hoped and there’s still a bit of work to do,” he said.

“But we’re really excited to open and provide a range of services for the community.”

The centre will feature three main wings: an administration wing, a community services wing, and a community focused retail wing.

Apart of the community focused retail wing is the food bank, which offers pantry staples, frozen meats and pre packaged frozen meals.

Those in need can purchase items at a heavily discounted price, with pre-packaged frozen meals available for $1.

“Previously, people wanting to use the food outlet have had to go through reception and prove that they’re in genuine need,” Mr Henwood said.

“The latest federal government report highlighted how much lower-middle-class people are hurting.

“Parents are often skipping meals because they don’t have food, so what we’ve said is we’ll open it up to everyone.”

The food bank will be run by volunteers, some who have carried over from the previous manager, others through a program that Impact have been running for a couple of years.

“We take people that have been unemployed for at least six months and work with them around improving their self-esteem, their ability to hold a job, and their job skills in particular,” Mr Henwood said.

“We’ll also be using volunteers who are required to do some community service to receive government payments, and those who volunteer because they love the community.

“We will use a mixture of all three in different areas of the operation that we are getting up and running in stages.”

Alongside Impact, other community groups will operate out of the centre, including Cuppa Plus Inc , which focuses on reducing the impacts that social isolation has on the mental and physical wellbeing of seniors.

“Our community services wing will allow community groups to hire out spaces for events or workshops,” Mr Henwood said.

“We will also run our job-skilling program in this wing where we spend a day with a traning officer getting a qualification, be it in hospitality, retail or landscaping.”

Into next year, Impact Services and Mr Henwood have bold plans to include services such as counselling, life coaching, domestic violence services and a mens mental health program.

“We want to make a community centre for the community, operated by locals,” he said.

“Our vision is big, and we’re building a model we can replicate elsewhere.”
