Beenleigh Bowls Club is being included in a a unique lawn bowls event travelling from Sydney to Brisbane to push for bowls’ inclusion at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Beenleigh Bowls Club vice chair Eileen Gough said the “Bowls for Brisbane – The Long Roll”, showcase event would travel more than 1000km, visiting 32 clubs over 16 days.
“At each stop along the journey, a round of a single match is played, with an “Australia”
team competing against a “Rest of the World” team, before the result is decided in
Brisbane,” Mrs Gough said.
The format will be one-bowl triples with two sets of seven ends.
Different players will participate at each club to get as many people involved in the 16-day extravaganza as possible.
Beenleigh Bowls Club will host a round of the match from 10.45am-noon on Monday, 11 May.
“This is a great opportunity to showcase a local club being part of a national sporting
initiative connecting communities from Sydney to Brisbane,” Mrs Gough said.
“The event highlights the diversity, community impact and global appeal of lawn bowls,
as well as showcases the clubs that are at the heart of the sport.”
The Long Roll is an initiative of Bowls Australia, in partnership with World Bowls, Bowls NSW and Bowls Queensland.
Bowls Australia’s The Long Roll organiser Tony Carter said bowls was about celebrating the extensive bowls community by highlighting its inclusivity and participation.
“This event is showcasing that bowls is for everyone,” Mr Carter said.
“Whether you’re an Australian Jackaroo, a local pennant player or a barefoot bowler, we’re all united by one dream – bowls at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“The Long Roll unites clubs, players and fans in a movement that celebrates everything great about the sport of bowls and drive a concerted push for the sport’s inclusion,” he said.
